India will be required to play greater role in the field of Intellectual property for technology in clean development mechanism, adaptation and mitigation of climate change. The technology created in the times to come must be shared for the benefit of the world, opined Mr. Anand Sharma, Minister of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. He was speaking at the Annual Intellectual Property Awards – 2010 on the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day organized jointly by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Government of India, Intellectual Property India and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The Annual Cash Awards of Rs. 1 lakh each to the highest number of patents granted to two individuals and Rs. Fifty thousand for highest number of design registered by an individual have been instituted for the first time by the Indian Patent Office.

The minister presented award to the categories of highest number of patents granted office in the year 2009 to an industry: Hindustan Unilever Limited. Highest number of patents granted office in the year 2009 to an institution to Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), and individual Mr. Valagam Rajagopal Raghunathan. Bilcare Limited was given award for Indian industry for securing highest number of registered design in the year 2009, and Mr. Vallabh Thakkarshibhai Ramani secured the same in individual category. The highest number of trademarks granted by Indian Trademark Registry in the year 2009 went to Reliance Industries Limited.

Mr. Sharma pointed out that India is below the global benchmark today in terms as patent applications from India declined 30% last year. On the other hand China, Japan, Singapore and South Korea filed larger patent applications in the backdrop of global financial crisis. Towards the endeavor of mobilizing global intellectual collation in India, the government is coming up with National Innovation Council and the National Innovation policy is being framed, he added.

Mr. Sunil Kant Munjal, Past President CII and Chairman Hero Corporate Service Limited, stated that to exhibit its capabilities India has to demonstrate its intellectual capital. Furthermore litigation procedures for patents should be facilitated to instigate confidence in the economy for attracting R&D, technology and knowledge.

Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General CII, said that India is amongst the economies whose growth path is driven by intellectual capital. Towards this pathway CII has formulated CII IP Owners Forum wherein IP representatives, entrepreneurs, experts, industry work closely with the ministry. He also mentioned that CII is the only industry association which is working in the field to handhold innovators to protect their IPs with an aim to increase the number of Indian IP Owners manifold.

The end user safety, health and well being became the genesis of innovation, culture at Bilcare said Dr Praful Naik, Bilcare's CSO  and ED. While we focussed on pathbreaking innovations in technologies (creators of world's first non-clonable security technology), we gave equal impetus on creating hundreds of inimitable designs which could provide distinctive identity to any product more particulary a medicine being consumed by a patient.
